Cheating in Singing

In the last decade or so, it’s become more common for musicians to write and sing about cheating on a significant other.

Popular radio tunes in this vein include “Picture” by Kid Rock, featuring Sheryl Crow; “Lips of an Angel” by Hinder; and “Unfaithful” by Rihanna.

With the excessive glorification of so-called freedom and choice comes a decrease in the value of loyalty.

Society and the entertainment industry tell us to do whatever we want and to live life without regard for others. And so the decrease in trust, self-control and respect for one another comes out in our songs.

How do you believe we can help our culture once again see the importance of fidelity and live accordingly?

  1. It’s sad! I think a big part of the problem is from people trying to “modernize” Christianity and in the process following it more as an afterthought. I can’t tell you how many times I hear people tell me they are “spiritual, but not religious”. It’s sad what a lukewarm culture we have become.

I think until we get more people filling up the pews at Mass and living out their Catholic faith everyday instead of just a couple hours on Sunday things will continue on their current path or even get worse. We all need to start within our own families to rebuild and emphasize our faith on a daily basis and show our children that God is our priority. Pray with our families, teach them devotions, and make sure that they are not just knowing bits and pieces of the faith but living it.

It seems to me it took us about 60 years to get where we are and I really don’t see a quick fix but with faith, prayer and perseverance we can, through Christ, overcome the world! (John 16:33)

  2. We need married saints more than ever–people who show that chastity before marriage and purity of heart in marriage is a joy. Examples of the joy of fidelity can’t be purchased off the shelf. They have to be grown, one at a time.
